Riccardo Garrone was an influential figure in the Italian industrial scene. CEO of the ERG oil company and chairman of the Sampdoria football club, he was able to sustain the renovation of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, designed by Aldo Rossi. In September 2018, Prof. Carmen Andriani asked me to join the design team in charge of the realization of a commemorative metal plate. It was meant be installed into the theatre foyer. We decided to die-cast the plate into aluminum and then mill the lettering with CNC machinery.
Given that a CNC tool was involved, the choice for the letter shapes leaned immediately into the stencil area. I finally had the perfect opportunity to use a typeface from the Ourtype Stencil Collection. Couteau by Pierre Pané-Farré served the purpose perfectly. The design team included Davide Servente and Alberto Gaglio. The plate was cast in the Campagner foundry in Paderno Dugnano (Milan).
